Whether you’re just graduating college and applying to your first real job, or you’ve been in the workforce for quite some time now and need to clean up and rewrite your resume, you may have stumbled across some well-meaning, albeit false, information about that resume. Fortunately, we’re here to debunk some of them. Here are 8 of the most common resume myths. 

1. Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is everything

Up until now, your GPA has played a significant role in your education and experience. It is a numerical representation of your intelligence and work ethic and one you are compared against your peers with. Except that outside of your education, it doesn’t mean all that much. Unless you attended an Ivy League or incredibly well-known school for your field, your GPA is an arbitrary number that doesn’t mean anything to anyone except yourself. Leave it off the resume.

2. Resumes must only be one page

Resumes should only be one page if you have a short work history. Otherwise your resume can, and should be, two pages. However, it’s important not to ramble on about unimportant information to try to hit a two-page length. Quality is better than quantity.

3. Resumes must include your entire work history

Resumes should include your entire relevant work history. If it doesn’t illustrate your expertise or contribute to your current skills in any way, leave it off your resume. You can also forego any jobs that you were at for less than 6 months (unless you are a contractor) as job hopping is often looked at as a negative. Instead, lump similar job functions into one category and describe your general skills and accomplishments as one entry.

4. Generalize your resume so you don’t have to update it for every application

You may believe that having a generalized resume will make it easier for you to apply to more jobs. Since it is a numbers game, after all. More applications = more interviews. Right? Wrong. By making your resume more specific and targeted to the job you’re applying for, you’re more likely to land an interview.

5. No one notices typos and grammatical errors

In today’s job market, hiring managers are inundated with resumes. More and more applicants are landing on their desks with similar work histories and education, so they are looking for reasons to toss your resume. Don’t give them a reason to by being too lazy to spellcheck. Having grammatical errors and typos show you don’t pay attention to details, and you could easily be passed up for a job because of them.

6. A good resume will ensure you land a job

Just because your resume is flawless doesn’t mean you’ll get the job every time. A good resume in truth should ensure you an interview, from there its up to you! Your resume shows off your skills and accomplishments, it’s a stepping stone to get you into an interview.

7. Fancy formatting will impress hiring managers

Even though there are thousands of beautiful resume formats, a fancy one won’t necessarily impress your hiring manager. Even if you’re in a creative field (which by the way is the ONLY time you should use a custom, fancy format), you will need a simple, clean version to upload into candidate application systems. Many times an HR professional or hiring manager only reviews resumes that meet certain criteria within their applicant tracking system (ATS). If that ATS can’t read your resume, a hiring manager will never even know you exist.

8. It’s all about your resume – Not you

Your resume is a representation of your skills and experience, but it’s not the end all be all. In the end, you will be the deciding factor in whether you land a job or not. So remember not to stress about writing the perfect resume.
